Laparoscopy Overview
Laparoscopy is a method to see into the abdomen through small incisions, about a quarter of an inch long. It may take 2-3 incisions to accomplish a surgery. Carbon dioxide is used to distend the abdominal wall so that your internal organs may be seen.
By using a scope, the ovaries, uterus, ureters (kidney tubes), intestines, liver and abdominal wall are visible. By visualizing these structures, Dr. Basinski or Dr. Juran are able to diagnose conditions that may be causing you pain or bleeding.
The surgery can take as little as 10 minutes or up to an hour depending on what needs to be done. If you have a lot of scar tissue, it may take more time to remove the scar tissue. If you have endometriosis, additional time may be needed to remove visible endometriotic implants.
The doctor can usually remove one or both ovaries with the laparoscope and bring them through a 1-inch incision above the pubic hairline.
Most women can return to work within 2-7 days after the procedure.
